Subject: OgSport Lu & Darver

Ogsport & Darver
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Its pretty certain that the ancient Chinese Philosopher Lao-tzu hadn't got the
recovery programme for Louth football in mind when this ancient Chinese proverb
was first coined. However, the people at the cutting edge of Ogsport Lu and the
Darver Project would have a clear understanding of what was in the great man's
head.
The similarities between both are striking. They are not original completely
wonderful fully formed ideas which are unique to this county. They do however
challenge the thinking within in terms of how the county should regain its
status in the upper echelons of the national sport.
Darver took its first step back in 2002. The small group of people would have
had some idea of the obstacles to be surmounted, but probably didn't appreciate
the full extent of the various tripwires that they would have to negotiate on
their journey. The first milestone was the acquisition of the site in 2003. By
setting realistic steps which were achievable the journey has run over half of
its course. The next major step will be achieved at Easter 2009 with the opening
of the new clubhouse.
The first step for Ogsport was in November 2006. If the catalyst
for Darver was the night the County Under 21 side were forced to train on the
side of a dark country road, Ogsport's catalyst was the realization that fresh
thinking was required if the rejuvenation of gaelic games in the county was ever
going to take off. Ogsport fully embraces the concept of player development and
coach education particularly through small-sided games.
Smaller numbers are used to ensure plenty of ball contact for all involved. It
involves games of shorter duration and greater intensity. Because of the smaller
pitch size, players are more involved on both sides of the ball as in attacking
and defending. There are more decisions to be made by players and coaches, thus
ensuring greater tactical awareness. Greater tactical awareness requires
specialized skills in coaches who are required to educate and develop the
players.
Small sided games, also solves the problem for clubs with numerical
difficulties. Two types of situations spring to mind. The club with large
numbers can field a number of different teams at the appropriate grade. The club
who could never field at 15 a side because of low numbers can now compete on
their own thus giving their youngsters an immediate identity with their club
Has Louth GAA benefitted from Darver and Ogsport? If so, how can that benefit be
measured? A look at the programme of games, the participation levels, and the
amount of times that Darver has been called in to use tells the story. A look at
the weekly publicity in the local press and at the Ogsport Lu website launched
earlier this year also tells the story.
2007 saw the staging of the first Ogsport programme of games on an all-county
basis for the 6 to 13 age group. Last years under 9 programme was run on a
monthly basis – this year it is running every fortnight. The under 7 programme
was introduced this year for the first time. It's run on a monthly basis,
already there are cries for more regular games for these football starved
youngsters eager to get out there in their club colours.
One day all-county blitzes in Darver attract 48 teams who play three games on 16
pitches. In the gate at 6.45, out at 8.15, 500 of Louth's finest footballers who
just can't wait for the next one to come along.
The under 11's have been running on a fortnightly basis and will gather in
Darver on 6 occasions in August and September for a 9 a side blitz in their
respective grades. There are no fewer than 40 teams entered. There are 120 games
scheduled over the 6 nights, with the 9 a side format ensuring an intensity both
on and off the field as the respective players and coaches shape up to one
another.
The Under 13's have their league programme and 9-a side all co blitz over, and
shoot into championship mode from mid August until September. Again, Darver will
host 35 teams and 70 odd championship games in three different grades as the
cream of the county's footballers strive to win their first county championship
medal. Each Grade has a back door which allows any first round fallers a second
chance, and there's also a side door to allow teams to compete in a B section
should they find the going too tough in the A section.
In October, there will be an inter-regional competition involving eight teams
from North, South, East, West, Dundalk, Dun Dealgan, Drogheda and Droichead Atha.
The 2009 Under 14 Development Squad mentors will use this tournament to spot the
available talent for next year's squad. Last year, this tournament was
invaluable to the 2008 Under 14 Development Squad Mentors.
Ogsport and Darver have advanced to where they are, because entrenched and
predictable thinking has been sidelined. Since the birth of Ogsport, they have
both spring-boarded off one another continuously. They both bring the best out
in one another. There is not one event that Darver cannot cater for, and there
is not one event that Ogsport cannot organize. Realistic goals are set and
delivered, no pie in the sky and no airy-fairy stuff.
The right people and the right place!
There is a mutual respect and admiration between Darver and Ogsport – both doing
the right thing for the right reason. Both led by single-minded, determined
individuals who are respected throughout the county and further afield. Both
supported by determined loyal groups who are determined to see Louth GAA take
its place at the top table again.
Maybe, there's a lesson there for others about what can be achieved when
respect, co-operation and appreciation are present.
